This is a difficult and important blog post for me. I studied Fashion Journalism and I worked in fashion for some years. I loved everything about fashion and I really was not seeing what there was behind it.
Can Fashion be sustainable?
I’ve always seen fashion as a non stoppable machine, a beautiful art machine, full of colors, creativity, different fabrics, always in motion, always changing…
Every year there was something new you NEEDED to have, you cannot afford the Versace dress? Buy from H&M and Zara the cheapest similar version, that next year you’ll forget about and maybe will throw away.
Let’s start to say what sustainable fashion is.
It is a system that makes it possible to have a positive social and environmental impact. It goes from size inclusivity, to transparency, to the impact on the environment, to the rights of people that work in the industry.
I needed time and a bit of Gretha Thunberg to understand what’s behind the fashion industry. I’m not pointing my fingers on designers. They just create fantastic pieces of art and I’ll continue to think this. They are artist just like painters or musicians.
The problems are others:
- fast fashion
- Every year tons of clothes are created at a really low cost and everything not sold will finish in the landfill in zero time, cause shops will need new space for new creations. Have you ever seen a picture of the Atacama Desert?
- Low cost means bad quality of fabric, maybe bad quality dyes that pollute a lot; the fabric will break easily and you’ll soon throw away the cloth.
- Low cost means that fashion workers (usually from a poor country) are not paid enough.
Is this right? Is this fair? Is your sparkling H&M t-shirt you’ll wear only for 2 months and then you’ll throw it away worth all this?
- companies are driving our need for more. Do we really need 10 pairs or more of jeans? The blue one, the black one, the patchwork one… really? Do we need 30 t-shirts in different shades of grey?
Or maybe we just need clothes that:- make us feel good and comfortable
- are made for what we need (work, home, fitness…) and nothing else
- are not harmful for our health (avoid bad quality dyi for example) ?
So, can we dribble all this to have a sustainable fashion? Is a sustainable fashion possible?
Of course! And we need only to think a bit more about how and where we spend our money. Sustainable fashion is a thing.
We are only people, we don’t run the fashion industry, but all together we can make them change!
Possible solutions
There are a lot of things you can do not to pollute with fashion:
- just read a bit more about the brands that you usually choose. Are they fast fashion? Do they think ethically? For example, if you pay 20€ for a pair of pants, for sure that brand is not sustainable. On the opposite side, if a pair of jeans costs 500€ it doesn’t mean it is sustainable.
- consider different factors like cost, shipping options (does it comes from the other part of the world or is it near?), size inclusivity, materials quality (prefer natural materials!)
- BUY LESS. I know that shopping is a beautiful therapy, but you don’t need to buy 32 t-shirts at once, right? You can go window shopping and at the end you can buy that pair of jeans that fits you so well and that you know you’ll wear for years!
Try to think every time: do I really need this? Does it make me feel good? WILL I WEAR IT MORE THAN ONCE?- try to track your spending and fix a budget that you can use to buy clothes
- before buying new things if you can repurpose an old cloth adding some details, repairing a scratch… I’m using now the Dr Martens I was using 15 years ago in high school, for example. I only changed the laces and cleaned them well.
- shop secondhand. I’m happy that now is becoming on vogue to shop secondhand and to have vintage clothes. It’s beautiful and the most sustainable thing ever. Usually, if you look well, secondhand clothes are of good quality and beautiful.
- find new sustainable brands or small businesses. There can be one in your city!
- educate yourself on WHY this is important. If you are aware of the impact that a type of fashion has on the environment and on people, you’ll be more conscientious about your purchase. Some good documentaries are:

- Minimalism: A documentary about the important things (Netflix)

Did I talk about every aspects of fashion? For sure no, but I can always learn more and add new articles about what I find.

Questo è un post sia difficile che molto importante per me.
Ho studiato giornalismo di moda e ho lavorato nella moda per alcuni anni. Amavo tutto della moda e davvero non riuscivo a vedere cosa ci fosse dietro.
La moda può essere sostenibile?
Ho sempre visto la moda come una macchina inarrestabile, una bellissima produttrice d’arte, piena di colori, creatività, tessuti diversi, sempre in movimento, in continua evoluzione… Ogni anno c’è qualcosa di nuovo che DEVI avere, non puoi permetterti l’abito Versace? Acquista da H&M o Zara la versione simile più economica, di cui l’anno prossimo ti dimenticherai e forse butterai via.
Cominciamo col dire cos’è la moda sostenibile: è un sistema che permette di avere un positivo impatto sociale e ambientale. Si va dall’inclusività delle taglie, alla trasparenza, all’impatto sull’ambiente, ai diritti delle persone che lavorano nel settore.
Ho avuto bisogno di tempo e di un po’ di Gretha Thunberg per capire cosa c’è dietro l’industria della moda.
Non sto puntando il dito sui designer. Creano solo fantastici pezzi d’arte e continuerò a pensarlo. Sono artisti proprio come pittori o musicisti.
I problemi sono altri:
- fast fashion.
- Ogni anno vengono create tonnellate di vestiti a un costo davvero basso e tutto ciò che non viene venduto finirà in discarica tempo zero, perché i negozi avranno bisogno di nuovi spazi per nuove creazioni. Hai mai visto una foto del deserto di Atacama?
- Basso costo significa cattiva qualità del tessuto, magari tinture di pessima qualità che inquinano molto; il tessuto si rovinerà facilmente e presto getterai via il capo.
- Basso costo significa che i lavoratori della moda (di solito provenienti da un paese povero) non sono pagati abbastanza
È giusto? La tua scintillante t-shirt di H&M che indosserai solo per 2 mesi e poi butterai via vale tutto questo?
- Le aziende creano un bisogno fittizio. Abbiamo davvero bisogno di 10 paia o più di jeans? Quello blu, quello nero, quello patchwork… davvero? Abbiamo bisogno di 30 t-shirt in diverse tonalità di grigio?
O forse abbiamo solo bisogno di vestiti che:- ci facciano sentire bene e a nostro agio
- siano fatti per ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno (lavoro, casa, fitness…) e nient’altro
- non siano dannosi per la nostra salute (evita ad esempio le tinture di cattiva qualità) ?
Allora, possiamo sorpassare tutto questo per avere una moda sostenibile?Certo! Dobbiamo solo pensare un po’ di più a come e dove spendiamo i nostri soldi. La moda sostenibile c’è.
Siamo solo persone, non gestiamo l’industria della moda, ma tutti insieme nel nostro piccolo, attraverso le nostre scelte, possiamo farla cambiare!
Possibili soluzioni
Ci sono molte cose che possiamo fare:
- cerca informazioni sui marchi che scegli di solito. Sono fast fashion? Pensano eticamente? Se paghi 20€ per un paio di pantaloni, di sicuro quel marchio non è sostenibile. Ma anche, se un paio di jeans costa 500€ non significa che sia sostenibile.
- Considera diversi fattori come il costo, le opzioni di spedizione (proviene dall’altra parte del mondo o è vicino?), inclusività delle taglie, qualità dei materiali (preferire materiali naturali!)
- COMPRA MENO. So che lo shopping è una bella terapia, ma non è necessario acquistare 32 magliette in una volta, giusto? Puoi andare a guardare le vetrine e alla fine puoi comprare quel paio di jeans che ti sta così bene e che sai che indosserai per anni!
- Cerca di pensare ogni volta: ne ho davvero bisogno? Mi fa stare bene? LO INDOSSERO’ PIU’ DI UNA VOLTA? Cerca di tenere traccia delle tue spese e fissare un budget che puoi utilizzare per acquistare vestiti
- prima di comprare cose nuove, riutilizza un vecchio vestito aggiungendo alcuni dettagli, riparando un graffio… Ad esempio io sto usando adesso le Dr Martens che usavo 15 anni fa al liceo. Ho solo cambiato i lacci e le ho pulite bene.
- acquista capi second hand. Sono felice che ora stia diventando di moda fare acquisti di seconda mano e avere vestiti vintage. Sono belli e davvero l’opzione più sostenibile di tutte. Di solito, se hai un buon occhio, i vestiti di seconda mano sono di buona qualità.
- trova nuovi marchi sostenibili o piccole nuove imprese. Ce ne può essere uno nella tua città!
- istruisci te stesso sul PERCHÉ tutto questo sia così importante. Se sei consapevole dell’impatto che un tipo di moda ha sull’ambiente e sulle persone, sarai più coscienzioso sul tuo acquisto. Alcuni buoni documentari sono:
